The Good and the Bad When Selecting a Private Label Line for Your Own Products!


The Good

Custom label builds loyalty

Having your own private label products shows your clients that you stand behind the products you sell and that you know what you are doing.  This increases the image of yourself and your salon.
 
The Bad
 
Custom label is too expensive
In the past that has been the case.  If you wanted your own product line you had to design it and purchase a minimum of 1000 per item - way too much for most salon owners - After that came laboratories that sold you product off the ‘rack’, but if the salon wanted their own label, it was still a minimum of 250 - 500 pieces per item plus high label charges. Now there are Private Label companies that will let you start your own line for the low investment of $200 dollars. They let you order incredibly low minimums with your very own premium four color custom label, without paying large design fees.
 
The products are not as good as others
Most laboratories making products for private label are as good or better than many so called designer brands. After all, where do you think most doctors or designers purchase their products from? Those exact same labs. Some points to observe when thinking about private labeling:
 
  • Test before ordering, if the Lab does not have testers or samples available do not purchase.
  • Make sure that you differentiate between what you use in the salon and what your customer uses at home - the in salon products have to be geared for faster performance, and back bar items have to be better priced than retail products.
  • Will the lab or company provide you with educational materials and customer service materials? Will they provide seminars and sales tools for you and your staff? 
  • Make a plan on how to start the line and purchase a few products - like some body care products first and then introduce others. Make use of any available help the company will give you.
  • Make sure the company has a good return policy and supports you with quality assurance.
 
It is too confusing and scary to promote my own line
