As a trained beauty professional, you have special talents,
skills, and experience. As a vital member of your community, you
have a solid connection to the people around you. And as a caring,
involved person, you have an active interest in helping others.
Put all of these together and you have exactly what we're looking
for in a Look Good...Feel Better volunteer.
Look Good...Feel Better is a free national program to
help improve the self-image and self-esteem of women experiencing
appearance-related side effects from cancer treatment. Founded in
1989, Look Good...Feel Better is a partnership of the Cosmetic,
Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA) Foundation, the American
Cancer Society (ACS), and the National Cosmetology Association (NCA).
A One time support service, Look Good...Feel Better
offers hands on, self-help instruction and education by volunteer
cosmetologists like you. It is available in three formats: group
sessions, one-on-one salon consultation, and self-help materials.
Both the group sessions and the salon consultations are dependent
on volunteer beauty professionals who are trained experts in hairstyling,
skin care, makeup and nail care.
We need you.
The Volunteer's Role
As a volunteer in Look Good...Feel Better, you will be trained and
certified in the program, working with your local American Cancer
Society and local affiliate of the National Cosmetology Association.
You'll become part of a national Look Good...Feel Better team which
will direct and support your volunteer efforts. You will participate
in a Look Good...Feel Better group session conducted by one or more
trained beauty professionals who are certified as program volunteers.
Group sessions typically include 6-10 women patients and take place
in a hospital, comprehensive cancer center, American Cancer Society
office, or
other community setting. For patients who are unable
to attend a group program, individual salon consultations are also
offered free of charge by participating cosmetologists throughout
the country.
The Session
A typical two-hour group session is based on an agenda developed
by Look Good...Feel Better. The first portion of the session covers
skin care and make-up. It outlines the basics of complete facial
skin care and make-up application during a demonstration of the
program's 12-step make-up guide. All participants receive a complimentary
make-up kit to use during their session as they follow and learn
from the demonstration.
The second portion of the session is primarly devoted
to coping with hair loss. Participants receive information and education
about wigs, and instruction on how to wear hats, turbans, scarves,
and other accessories. Nail care do's and don'ts during cancer treatment
are also discussed.
The Rewards
As a Look Good...Feel Better volunteer, you'll quickly discover
its many lasting rewards. Here's what some active volunteers, and
the women they've helped, have to say about the program:
"Look Good...Feel
Better is how I can give something back to the community and it
makes me feel really great!"
Oribe Canales, renowned hairstylist and Look Good...Feel Better
volunteer
"Look Good...Feel
Better is the best thing since hairspray!"
Eivind Bjerke, LGFB volunteer and State Sunrise Award Winner for
Outstanding Service
"The volunteer
cosmetologists are to be commended for their concern, knowledge,
and sensitivity. I hope they realize what a truly wonderful thing
it is they're doing."
