- Use scent. Aromatherapy adds a new level of sensation
to your session room, making it memorable in a soothing and welcoming way.
A diffuser, often powered by candlelight, can be used to disperse the chosen scent.
- Employ feng shui. This ancient Chinese art of design
and placement can positively affect the energy in your space. Hang a bamboo
flute for harmony; place an aquarium or small fountain near the entrance to
encourage prosperity; and hang something red on the wall opposite the front
door to encourage a good reputation in the community.
- Consider the client. Have a space for clients to change
and keep their clothing. Provide water, tissues, a mirror, and soft rugs and linens.
- Eliminate clutter and spotlight your resources. Use a
wall rack to organize your massage lotions, gels, creams and oils. This will
show that you carry a variety of products, and that you are able to offer what
best suits each client. Keep any reference books on shelves, and hang charts,
posters and certificates pertaining to bodywork.
- Get the light right. Use candles and soft perimeter lighting,
on shelves or in corners, instead of overhead lights. A strand of colored lights
can brighten the room and your client's mood on a dreary day.
- Take control of the temperature. Keep your room cozy warm
in winter and use a fan or nearby window to let a soft breeze flow through in warmer months.
- Grow plants. Live plants can lift the energy in your session
room and add to the ambience with a hint of Mother Nature. Fresh flowers are also
a nice touch.
- Sound it out. Purchase a wide range of mellow music and be
sure to test it yourself before trying the tunes on a client. Music or the use of
a fan can help muffle background noise if you work in a busy facility.
- Color it calm. Paint your walls and pick accessories, such
as linens and pillows, with relaxation in mind. Blue has been found to have a
calming effect; greens are said to recall nature; and white and neutral tones are
safe ground for nearly any session room.
- Rock out! Use gemstones and crystals to bring desired elements
into your space. For instance, agate is associated with grounding and balance, promoting
longevity and providing protection. Amazonite is said to enhance communication and clarity
while dispersing negative energy. Try chalcedony to build vitality and ease melancholy feelings.
